Larraine Seiden
Inside out. Outside in. Either way, I paint spaces people inhabit. Inspired by both the human body and the built environment, my paintings reflect an inner landscape. These places seem familiar, but undefined. How does life mark us and how do we mark/make the places we live?
Through layering, scratching, drawing, and scraping, my building blocks of color play like a stitched textile or a city block. And like old quilts, there are stories, time and use implied in the layers of my oil or encaustic paintings and in their occasional frayed edge. Quivering, fleshy outlines marked by time place my figures in this world. The weighty figures twist and float awkwardly to find lightness through the physical. They’re here, but maybe there’s somewhere else just beyond the pictures’ edges?
